Exploring the dialogue between musical composition, natural light, and the raw poetry of oil on canvas.
Ila Valcarcel is a contemporary visual artist and composer whose multi-disciplinary background infuses every brushstroke with lyrical presence. Having composed and recorded original acoustic works—including the acclaimed single “No Words”—Ila recognized early on that visual art and musical composition share the exact same soul: rhythm, crescendo, resonance, and stillness.
From her studio on the shores of Southwest Florida, she immerses herself in the expansive atmosphere of coastal waterways, shifting sandbars, and dramatic tropical skies. Her works reject the flat and passive; instead, they invite touch, contemplation, and emotional kinship through heavy palette knife impasto, hand-gilded 24-karat gold foil, and translucent glazes.
“When I paint, I am not depicting what a place looks like; I am capturing what it felt like to stand before it in total quiet.”
A commitment to traditional archival craftsmanship balanced with modern expressionist freedom.
Stretched exclusively on custom kiln-dried basswood stretcher bars, providing a durable, warp-resistant foundation built to endure for generations.
Hand-burnished leafing catches shifting natural and artificial lighting throughout the day, breathing continuous, changing life into each composition.
Incorporating cold wax, crushed quartz sands, and dense pigment pastes applied with forged steel palette knives creates an unmistakable sculptural presence.
Finished with non-yellowing satin damar and modern archival varnishes, protecting pigment vibrancy against environmental exposure and UV light.
